A risky California volcano has been seeing more earthquakes Los Angeles Times

volcano house

At its core, the Volcano House is a reflection of the desert on which it is sited, simultaneously serving as a window to the skies. Its 360-degree view perfectly encapsulates the way in which the mountains, sun and moon must work together to create the muted oranges that daily stretch beyond the horizon – grounded in cinder, with an eye toward the heavens. One of California’s riskiest volcanoes has been seeing more earthquakes. Is an eruption coming?

"Videolog" eventually became one of the more popular programs on KCET, and in 1990, the show was expanded to half hour-long episodes.[7] Included in Videolog was lint artist Slater Barron[8] among other topics relevant to Los Angeles and adjacent communities. Newberry Springs was a quiet town in 1968, save for a few hotels, the Bagdad Cafe and a “two-lane … asphalt ribbon of a highway, [Historic Route 66],” recalls Jamie, now a forensic expert in construction. That summer, the 10-year-old found himself in the front seat of a 1957 Thunderbird convertible with no air-conditioning, his father roaring 100 miles per hour toward the cinder cone where a team was bringing to life the vision he’d previously drawn in pencil on paper. Geologists produce volcanic hazard zone maps and assessments to show the types and locations of hazards that may occur during a future eruption. The USGS has published such maps for some, but not all, of California's Moderate to Very High Threat volcanoes. It is important to remember that hazard zone maps are dynamic—as geologic research progresses, existing maps are updated with additional detail, and new maps are created.

Construction began with large, curved beams placed into the foundation with a crane before they were covered in 1-by-3s, one piece at a time. “Then they were fit right into the chimney,” explains Bissner, who turns 91 in October. Just beyond the eerie dunes that make up the Mojave Desert’s Devils Playground, a glaringly white dome rises up out of the ground.

Gigantic earthquakes trigger volcanic eruptions ... or not

The historic Volcano House hotel has hosted a cadre of world dignitaries since the original building was opened in 1846. Lured by the volcanic forces of Pelehonuamea, visitors from around the world have gathered in various iterations of the hotel. Notably, Queen Lili‘uokalani, who reigned at the time of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, and Kalākaua, the last king of Hawaiʻi, reveled in the beauty of Kīlauea from Volcano House. Other famous guests have included Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, Amelia Earhart, Louis Pasteur, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Between May 2018 and October 2018, the hotel and the Kīlauea summit area of the national park were closed to the public due to volcanic explosions and earthquakes.

Step inside the Volcano House, a desert masterpiece

That’s according to Caltech researchers who have been studying the Long Valley Caldera, which includes the Mammoth Lakes area in Mono County. Geological Survey as one of three volcanoes in the state — along with 15 elsewhere in the U.S. — considered a “very high threat,” the highest-risk category defined by the agency. Bissner also designed a two-story caretaker’s residence at the bottom of the mountain, which housed Wallace’s machine shop on the first floor.

Perhaps the current or a future owner can complete Bissner’s vision, install the fountains based on the original design. Or maybe that’s the story of the Volcano House, left incomplete as a byproduct of the desert, becoming more a part of the environment in which it’s placed the longer it goes untouched. Ultimately, the architect says, it was the theft of Wallace’s machinery from the structure that compelled the draftsman to sell the property. “He sort of lost interest in the whole thing because he wanted to retire out there and have the blades and reinvent everything because that’s who he was,” Bissner explains. After a brief period of ownership by British developer Richard Bailey, Howser purchased the property in 2003.

Researchers have long thought the risk of a supervolcanic eruption in the Long Valley Caldera in our lifetime is extremely low, given that overall, the magma underneath the area is clearly cooling — essentially continuing to calm down. Generally speaking, changes in the shape of the ground and earthquake activity are commonly observed before eruptions — but those things do not necessarily mean an eruption will arrive soon. After working in New York City as the host of WCBS-TV's Real Life show,[6] Howser moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1981 to work as a reporter for KCBS-TV. During 1982 and 1983, he served as weekend host and correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. In 1983, he joined KCET (then a PBS affiliate) as host and producer of Videolog, a series of brief human-interest segments running less than 10 minutes each, that aired in between the station's shorter programs to fill up air time.

Historic Location

Howser conducted informal, often impromptu, interviews with locals involved with the sites he visited. He also produced California's Communities, California's Golden Fairs, Downtown, California's Water, California's Green, California's Golden Coast, California's Golden Parks, Road Trip, Visiting... Poised atop a 150-foot cinder cone in Newberry Springs, the galactic-looking saucer is as utterly out of the ordinary as it is perfectly in place, disrupting the desolate landscape with sudden sublime symmetry.

While the Long Valley Caldera itself is old and its magma is cooling and crystallizing, “there are extremely young lava flows” along the nearby Mono-Inyo Craters chain. The Caltech scientists concluded that the latter explanation appears to be the answer. That’s based on high-resolution underground images re-created with the use of several dozen seismometers, earthquake measurements and a machine-learning algorithm, according to the university.

Homer Heche Laffoon said in court documents filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court that the estate is "not yet in a condition to be closed" and that it has outstanding debts of more than $6 million. Anne Heche’s son said her estate is unable to pay its debts following her 2022 death after the fiery crash of her car into a home in Los Angeles. Geological Survey (USGS) for California identify fifteen volcanic centers of Low-, Moderate-, High-, or Very High Threat. Fees All guests must pay the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance fee which is $30 per each non-commercial vehicle, $25 per motorcycle or $15 per individual travelling on foot or bicycle.

Over the years, the structure has received criticism for its minimalist – if not crude – composition in the shadow of the home above. “I wanted it to blend in as much as I could so it wasn’t a feature,” Bissner explains of the building. But drive up the helical curve that winds up from the base of the mountain to the dwelling perched at the top, and you’ll find there’s more to this architectural icon than alien elements. The court documents say the estate has "a modest bank account," royalty payments, "other residual income from pre-death projects," a corporation that Heche was the sole shareholder of, LLC membership interests and "tangible personal property items." And it’s important to understand the area still poses a significant threat and remains capable of powerful earthquake swarms.

What are the best garden design apps?

So far, the reviews on the app have been mostly negative reviews due to the limited plant list and what some customers consider to be a confusing layout. Garden Planner by Artifact Interactive, available for Windows and Mac OSX computers, allows you to plan out gardens on a two-dimensional space from a birds-eye view. The mapping tool allows you to create gardens of various shapes and sizes, then fill them with pre-made objects, including a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers.

The garden planner also includes a planting calendar that provides users with information on when to plant, harvest, and care for their crops. The software provides users with a comprehensive garden planning experience, with features that cater to both beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Marshalls Garden Visualiser offers a wide range of products that can be added to the garden design, including paths, garden edgings, greenhouses, sheds, walling, and paving. With all these products at their disposal, users can create a unique and personalised garden design that suits their specific needs and preferences. The software comes equipped with a range of highly useful tools and utilities that can be used by both professionals and beginners alike.

How to choose the best landscape design software for you

Planning your garden can take some hard work -- from planting to tending to your plants to regular watering. With myGarden by your side, you’ll gain knowledge, track your garden’s journey, and create a thriving, vibrant outdoor space. As the name gives away, this app can be used to identify a plant based on its leaves. SmartDraw is easy to use because it does so much of the drawing for you. Start with one of hundreds of garden design templates from basic to complex layouts for homes, parks, and office buildings. The pricing structures for the GrowVeg garden app are also reasonable.

You can see it in perspective, as well as diversify it, using the built-in wide library of objects and models. Another handy garden planner app is Gardena, which allows you to choose your plot type and surface (soil, gravel, grass and so on) before adding in shrubs and plants galore to build it up. You'll need to measure your garden plot first though as it works best to scale. Better suited to those with a little more experience, Home Outside is an app which lets you mock up a design in the same way a professional would, using hand-drawn elements rather than augmented reality.

Our free garden planner is very intuitive when it comes to 3D renderings. Once your 2D plan is finished, all you need to do is convert the image to 3D, and you're done! You can buy landscape design software directly from the websites of the software providers. Check out our guide to the best and easiest landscape design software to help you get started. For example, it can help prevent soil erosion and runoff, it can promote the growth and well-being of both plants and animal populations, help clean the air, and it can support recycling.

Each estimate I send to a customer includes a rendering of their project using iScape. I have searched for similar apps and nothing compares to what this one can do. After reading several of the bad reviews I have to believe they are just trolling. Claiming there aren’t palm trees in the image library for example, totally bogus. There are around twenty different palms to choose from, so go figure. Whenever I’ve had an issue they’ve responded promptly with a solution.

If you’re looking for a dainty, lovely flower to use as a ground cover in your garden, you can’t go wrong with forget-me-nots. Delicate in appearance but deceptively hardy, they make the perfect additions to cottage or woodland-style landscape designs. However, these sweet-looking flowers are native to Europe and invasive in the U.S., and they can quickly spread out of control. The process of working with Planner 5D will not take you much time or require special knowledge in the field of landscape design.

While Gardenize is helpful in keeping your plant information organized, it does not feature a mapping tool, so you can’t use it to visualize the layout of your garden. But of course, it's so worth it to be surrounded by fragrant flowers, ornamental plants, and the opportunity to grow your own food. And with the help of these garden planning apps, designing your ideal garden and caring for your plants is a lot easier. One of the more basic planners on this list, this web-based tool from a garden company located in the U.K. Lets you draw and plan out your landscape and garden by using a drag-and-drop interface to place items like grass, paving, furniture, fountains, and many other things.

You can even tour your designs in virtual reality to really get to grips with it from all angles. Select a background scene from the pre-made templates and then drag and drop in fences, benches, arbours, etc to customise the look you want. You can then add landscape surfaces to your gardens, such as a lawn, brick path, stones, tiles, or gravel, and there are loads of trees, vines, shrubs, bulbs, and more. Garden Planner includes a library of over 1200 plant and garden object symbols, all of which you can customise. Plus, it includes easy to use drawing tools that let you plot out paving, decking, paths, walls, fences, pools, ponds and more.

The app also tells you which plants grow well beside each other and which do not with a chart and icons that flash as you’re building your garden map. Unfortunately, there’s no feature in this app for creating and naming your own plants; so if a type of plant that you plan to grow isn’t on the provided list, you’re out of luck. Also the plant list is very general, and you can’t edit your garden to display names of specific varieties.

Planner 5D is also great for inspiration, as it’s a very community-based landscape software and you can browse great projects created by other users. It even ranks users based on their activity and projects, with the option to hire top-ranking designers to help with your own projects. Your garden designs can be saved online so you never lose your progress and, once finished, you can save the design and export a list of the plants, etc you've included in your scheme. If you’re a beginner or intermediate, that might be enough to get you started in visualizing your outside space. If you’re a veteran designer looking for powerful creation tools, then it might not be the best landscape design software for you. But, there are a handful of clunky interface choices that mar an otherwise solid experience.

In addition to his house, Howser also gave all of his "California's Gold" tapes, books about California and money for school scholarships to the university. Upon Howser's death this week, friend and producer Ryan Morris remarked to The Huffington Post that Chapman was the closest thing the broadcaster had to next of kin. Howser listed the home in 2009 for $750,000 but eventually donated the entire thing to Chapman University in Orange, Calif. in April 2012. At the time, university President Jim Doti recalled to the campus newspaper that Howser would "much rather gift it to Chapman than sell it,” and was happy to donate it once Doti suggested the idea to him.

Are you oblivious to L.A. earthquakes? Here’s why you might be a ‘never-feeler’

These can rush down valleys and stream channels, destroying roads and bridges and carrying away entire buildings. Explosive volcanic eruptions blast lava fragments (tephra) and gas into the air with tremendous force from a volcanic vent. The finest particles, called volcanic ash, billow upward, forming an eruption column that can attain stratospheric heights in minutes. Simultaneously, searing volcanic gas laden with ash and chunks of lava may sweep down the flanks of the volcano as a pyroclastic flow, and ballistics (chunks of solid rock or partially molten lava) may come crashing down around the vent. Ash in the eruption cloud, carried by the prevailing winds, may remain suspended for hundreds of miles before settling to the ground as ash fall. The specific hazards to people and property depend on which volcano erupts, the style (effusive or explosive), the volume of lava, the location of the vent, the eruption duration, and local hydrologic (water) conditions.

What's Hot

If you would like to rent a tent, you may do so for an additional $40 per night, per tent (up to 2 tents). Ash could disrupt hundreds of daily flights in Northern California or the Mammoth Mountain area or bring down jetliners. And it could contaminate water supplies to much of the state (California’s largest reservoirs are close to the Shasta and Lassen volcanoes).

The severity of the hazard generally decreases with distance from the volcano vent. California’s last major destructive volcanic eruption came more than a century ago. One explosive eruption in 1915 obliterated a forest and created a gigantic mushroom cloud 30,000 feet high that could be seen as far as away as Eureka and Sacramento and blew volcanic ash 280 miles out, reaching Elko, Nev. One of California’s riskiest volcanoes has for decades been undergoing geological changes and seismic activity, which are sometimes a precursor to an eruption, but — thankfully — no supervolcanic eruptions are expected.

Hawai’i Volcanoes Lodging Company, LLC is authorized to provide campground accommodations and to rent out camping equipment within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. During less energetic effusive eruptions, hot, fluid lava may issue from the volcano as lava flows that can cover many miles in a single day. Alternatively, a sluggish plug of cooler, partially solidified lava may push up through a crack during an effusive eruption, creating a lava dome.

The types of volcanic hazards that can unfold depend upon the specific volcano and the type of eruption. Mt. Shasta, California’s largest volcano, had many eruptions in prehistoric times but has remained quiet in the modern era. And like the Long Valley Caldera, the magma beneath Lassen Volcanic Center is showing clear signs of cooling and contracting, Montgomery-Brown said.

Personal life

Scientists have long scrutinized the Long Valley Caldera, where there have been noticeable increases in earthquakes and ground fluctuations that began four decades ago. Notably, there were four magnitude 6 earthquakes in the Long Valley area in May 1980. A growing lava dome may become so steep that it collapses, explosively releasing pyroclastic flows which are potentially as hazardous as those produced during explosive eruptions. Volcano House is the name of a series of historic hotels built at the edge of Kīlauea, within the grounds of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i. The original 1877 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Volcano Art Center. During and after an explosive or effusive eruption, volcanic hazards are still a concern. Unstable ground, noxious gas emissions, and intense heat from fumaroles (steam vents) and hot springs, are dangerous. Loose volcanic debris on the flanks of the volcano can be mobilized by heavy rainfall or melting snow and ice, forming powerful floods of mud and rock (lahars) resembling rivers of wet concrete.

The Namakanipaio Campground features 10 rustic, one-room wooden cabins that are always in high demand. Intimate in the midst of nature, these cabins are ideal for visitors seeking a camping experience without setting up a tent. Montgomery-Brown, an expert on the Long Valley Caldera who is now with the USGS’ Cascades Volcano Observatory, said the most recent episode of increased earthquake activity in the area began in 2011 and was accompanied by a ground deformation in which the land started to rise. The Long Valley Caldera is a broad depression of land east of the Sierra Nevada. It’s roughly 40 miles east of Yosemite Valley, 200 miles east of San Francisco and 250 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. A caldera is formed when magma erupts or is otherwise taken out from beneath the ground.

There are some scientists who suspect the Long Valley Caldera as a volcano is moribund — essentially dead — and the increased seismic activity, when it happens, is being generated by fluids that are not magma, but are still hot and moving to the surface as the magma cools and solidifies. “We don’t think the region is gearing up for another supervolcanic eruption, but the cooling process may release enough gas and liquid to cause earthquakes and small eruptions,” Zhongwen Zhan, a Caltech professor of geophysics and a study co-author, said in a statement. A massive earthquake rattles a town, triggering fiery eruptions in nearby volcanoes.

The Long Valley Caldera was formed by a super-eruption about 760,000 years ago that blasted 140 cubic miles of magma, covering much of east-central California in hot ash that was blown as far away as present-day Nebraska. The two other volcanoes in California with that classification are Mt. Shasta in Siskiyou County and the Lassen Volcanic Center, which includes Lassen Peak in Shasta County. The threat assessment is not a list of which volcanoes are most likely to erupt or a ranking of those that are most active; rather, it’s defined as a combination of a volcano’s potential threat and the number of people and properties exposed to it.

Seattle's giant house spiders: Big and fast, but they won't kill you

giant house spider

They prefer to avoid contact with humans and hide during the day, meaning they are most often seen at night. Giant house spiders  are a very common spider species found in North Carolina. They have a leg span that can reach up to 4 inches, with a brown and hairy body. Their abdomen is patterned with a series of marks, usually lighter than their overall body color. What is true is that giant house spiders are big, reaching 4 inches with their leg span. Although the female has a larger body, the males have longer legs, according to Iowa State University’s BugGuide.

Brown Widow Spider

As almost all spiders, it possesses venom glands and given its size, also the possibility to penetrate human skin. However, the spider itself is very shy and its first instinct is to run (very fast) and hide when a larger being (humans or animals) approaches. In the few cases in which a giant house spider bites a human or a pet, the symptoms can include some local swelling and pain, comparable to a bee sting. The giant house spider has been treated as either one species, under the name Eratigena atrica, or as three species, E. As of April 2020[update], the three species view was accepted by the World Spider Catalog.

Where do giant house spiders hide?

It’s important to note that while Giant House Spiders may appear intimidating due to their size, they are generally harmless to humans. Their venom is not potent enough to cause any serious harm, and they are not aggressive unless provoked. In fact, these spiders play a beneficial role in controlling the population of pests, making them valuable allies in the ecosystem. Giant House Spiders usually inhabit dark, damp environments such as basements, crawl spaces, and garages. These areas provide them with the ideal conditions for survival, as they prefer the cool and moist environment. The spiders often seek out hidden corners and crevices where they can build their webs and wait for unsuspecting prey to become entangled.

Are Giant House Spiders Venomous?

For example, what we commonly refer to as “daddy-longlegs” are, in most cases, not really spiders. There are actually indoor spiders and outdoor spiders, which are completely different species. The giant house spider was introduced to British Columbia, Canada, around 1900 and has since spread out along the U.S. Independent populations have also been recorded around the Great Lakes in Wisconsin and Michigan.

With this species, it is only the adult females that are dangerous. An adult female Western Black Widow is shiny and black with an orange or red hourglass shape on the abdomen. The spider species Eratigena atrica, commonly known as Giant House Spider, belongs to the genus Eratigena, in the family Agelenidae.

How To Tell The Difference Between a Giant House Spider and a Hobo Spider?

Giant house spiders are not aggressive and usually run away, very rapidly, when startled. Giant House Spider bites are not serious and the giant house spiders’ venom is only harmful to individuals with specific allergies. They are often found in garages or basements, as well as outdoors, in firewood, or in gaps between bricks or stones. They build webs with a funnel-like hole in the center, where they sit and wait for prey. The giant house spider is not an active climber and indoors can be found on the floor or trapped in sinks and bathtubs where it has ventured in search of water.

When it comes to hunting, Giant House Spiders are skilled predators. They rely on their excellent vision to detect movement and vibrations, allowing them to locate potential prey. Once a suitable target is identified, the spider will swiftly move in and immobilize its victim using its venomous fangs.

They live up to three years, and their diet consists of small insects. They tend to build webs in the corners of your home, especially near a window. They capture insects in their webs, inject them with venom, and then save them to be eaten later. While these eight-legged creatures may give you the heebie-jeebies, they are very helpful in controlling the insect population inside your home.

Habitat, Diet, Life Cycle & Bites

They can be found in dark, quiet spaces like cabinets and undisturbed rooms like attics, basements, and garages. As the name suggests, these spiders are often found inside the home. American House spiders have a bulbous abdomen and are brown in color with white or darker patches and lines. Another myth that will be hardly comforting to most people — spiders are actually not more numerous in late summer.

The average lifespan of a Giant House Spider is around one to two years. During this time, they continue to play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. Their feeding habits and hunting prowess contribute to the control of insect populations, helping to keep the ecosystem in check. Once the eggs hatch, tiny spiderlings emerge, ready to embark on their own journey of growth and development. These young spiders go through several molting stages, shedding their exoskeletons as they grow larger. Each molt brings them closer to adulthood, and with each stage, they become more skilled hunters.
